The Israel Project Announces 2008 Paid Media Fellowship
The Israel Project (TIP) is pleased to announce its fifth annual summer Media Fellowship. Once again, talented young students from all over the world will have the opportunity to receive strategic communications training from top experts, work with TIPs dedicated staff and implement acquired knowledge and skills in the trenches of Israel advocacy.
TIP is an international non-profit organization and disseminates factual information available on its Web site, www.theisraelproject.org. TIP has offices in Washington, D.C. and Jerusalem. The organization has played a key role in disseminating facts to the media about Israel, ranging from the country's security issues to its desire for peace. More than 2,000 reporters use TIP's media services each week, and the organization has more than 140,000 supporters and activists on its rolls.
TIP's summer Media Fellowship program is one of the premier programs of its kind. The Media Fellowship is a paid two-month internship, available this year in two sessions and in two cities during the 2008 summer. The first session is in TIPs Jerusalem office from June 9 to Aug. 8 and the second session is in TIPs Washington, D.C. office from July 14 to Sept. 15. For additional details and to obtain an application, please visit www.theisraelproject.org/mediafellows.
TIPs Media Fellowship is unique in the resources devoted to participants. Said TIP Founder and President Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, We believe that each and every one of our Media Fellows is a future leader. We are inspired by their energy, intellect, love of Israel and desire for peace. We provide them with every opportunity to leverage these strengths by supplying them with tools and practical experience and by opening doors for their future careers.
TIP emphasizes individual attention and training for its Fellows, each of whom is hand-picked in a highly selective process. This investment manifests in training seminars with top experts in strategic communications and policy fields. Past Media Fellows have benefited from training sessions with world-renowned pollsters Frank Luntz, Ph.D., Stan Greenberg, Ph.D. and Neil Newhouse; seminars with journalists including CNNs Wolf Blitzer and Jennifer Griffin of FOX News; and discussions with major players in Middle East policy, from Ambassador Dennis Ross to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmerts then-foreign policy advisor, Miri Eisin. Whether receiving briefings at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. or participating in informational tours conducted by Israel Defense Forces spokespeople on the ground in Israel, the Media Fellows are at the center of events as they unfold.
Newly inducted board chair, Arlene Bearman, Ph.D., an educator and visionary leader, believes that the Fellowship is one of TIPs most important contributions. The experience of the Media Fellowship is a remarkable collage of strategic communications insights into the real world, Bearman said. Fellows have the opportunity to meet and question top reporters, famous media persona and public relations experts. They participate in the preparations and planning for public relations and news events, and get the flavor of the insatiable news beast of todays 24/7, 365 news cycle. Many have the opportunity to see their own written work published in major national publications. The experience is one remembered for a lifetime.
TIPs Media Fellows are treated as part of the organizations team, meaning that they are quickly immersed in the hands-on work and rapid reaction approach that is a hallmark of the organization. Throughout the summer, they help organize high-profile media events with top Israeli and U.S. officials; conduct background research to assist TIP staff in disseminating timely and accurate information to journalists; and spearhead innovative projects to get out the message on Israel.
Last summers projects included coordinating a massive petition drive supporting sanctions against Iran, which the Fellows delivered on Capitol Hill and staged a press conference to present; taking part in rallies in Washington, D.C. and New York in support of efforts made on behalf of kidnapped Israeli hostages held by Iran-backed Hamas and Hezbollah; and organizing provocative and thoughtful media events in the southern Israeli town of Sderot to draw attention to the plight of its residents and Israels efforts for peace.
As part of the Fellowship, TIP staff work hard to ensure that the Media Fellows have the option of leveraging their newly gained expertise to launch careers in Israel advocacy, strategic communications and related fields. To that end, Media Fellows regularly publish news articles and opinion pieces and are encouraged to interact with the myriad experts TIP works with to promote peace and security for Israel.
Past Media Fellows have gone on to work at major media outlets such as The Washington Post and the Associated Press; lobbying, advocacy and public relations organizations, including Ketchum, AIPAC, the Britain Israel Communications & Research Centre (BICOM) and TIP; and prestigious internships with Congress and the White House.
Former Media Fellow Michael Stephens (2007), in a piece published in Haaretz, wrote of his experience:
Lucky then that I should end up at TIP, where I spent nine weeks being exposed to the world of strategic communications and learning how to understand the media circus that clusters around the Middle East
The experiences were many, ranging from media seminars with some of Washington's top journalists, discussions with high-ranking diplomats, to meetings with the U.S. president's then press secretary Ari Fleischer, White House staffers and State Department officials
Indeed, TIP's efforts to increase international pressure on Iran received direct support from no less than seven presidential candidates; this was an experience that no job in London could have offered me
My time at TIP left me with a sense that I had participated in a genuinely reciprocal learning experience. It was a privilege to spend time among such a talented group of young individuals who were concerned about events in the Middle East, yet respectful of my opinions as much for the differences as the similarities.
The Israel Project is an international non-profit organization devoted to educating the press and the public about Israel while promoting security, freedom and peace. The Israel Project provides journalists, leaders and opinion-makers accurate information about Israel. The Israel Project is not related to any government or government agency.
