Time Commitment: 5 hours/week Spring semester.
Will receive a stipend.
Internship Description
Are you interested in some aspects of Jewish life (cultural, social justice, OR religious; bagels, lox OR Seinfeld?) but not other?
Have you had trouble connecting with the Jewish community at Miami?
Want to hone your active-listening skills, build on your communication skills, and gain incredible training for any future vocation that involves working with people?
NOT interested in convincing anyone to join anything, BUT like to talk, listen, and connect in meaningful ways with peers?
Are you creative, flexible, approachable, friendly, have a sense of humor, care about Jewish life, and want to learn and try new things?
Want to get paid to take 20 friends (yes, your existing friends, and/or new ones we'll connect you with) over the course of the year to coffee and talk with them about their lives, their general interests, what they love and what they really don't love about Judaism, how life is for them at Miami, and in general?
Want high quality training in how to do this?
Interested in responding to what you hear from your peers and potentially creating relevant, fun and powerful events** (a dinner, a social service project, an interfaith dialogue, Jewish internships or experiences off-campus, etc. or whatever emerges that we've never even thought of) that they have no time to create for themselves?
**IF students don't express interest in us creating events, we won't plan any. Coffee conversations will be considered successful in and of themselves if interns give their peers an affirming, interesting experience of talking about their Jewish and life interests and concerns.
*Hillel International on the Meaning of Engagement
Engagement is the act of reaching others, getting to know them, and connecting with them on the basis of their interests, ambitions, and passions. We use the word Engagement rather than outreach because we are NOT seeking to 'bring in' those from the outside into our circle, or into more traditional Jewish practices or activities. Instead, we attempt to engage others - meaning that we seek first to understand them, and then to find common interests, offerings, or experiences that meet them where they are and help them to connect to Jewish life in the ways that are most interesting to them - whatever those ways may be.
