(Miami University, Oxford, OH) Hillel at Miami University is joining in association with The Program in Jewish Studies and Dr. Steven M. DeLue, Acting Dean and Professor of Political Science, to kick off the newly developed Jewish Arts and Culture Colloquium Series. This new series will feature various discussions and seminars concerning all areas of Jewish Arts and Culture. The first event will be held as a dinner and discussion session.

The first discussion with Dr. DeLue will take place on Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in MacMillan Hall. It will focus specifically on Phillip Roth's most recent work, “The Plot Against America.” If you would like to be a part of this program, and do not have access to the book or the reviews, photocopies will be available beforehand courtesy of Sven-Erik Rose. You may contact him regarding this issue at roses@muohio.edu or Miami University Hillel at muhillel@muhillel.org.

The book “The Plot Against America” by Phillip Roth focuses on topics such as the different experiences of Jews in Europe and America, and what the attack on American Jews says about how social violence is, or could be, directed at many Americans. Dr. DeLue will provide a framework to help people to understand how society defines, isolates, and attacks corroded democratic and liberal rights, based on traditions, and eventually, society at large.

Dinner will be provided, so come with an appetite! This is just the beginning of what the Hillel Foundation hopes to be a collection of unique and exciting new opportunities that will be offered to both the Jewish and general community of Miami University.

Hillel at Miami University provides a wide variety of social, educational, community service, religious, and cultural experiences for students and the community of Oxford. There are many Jewish groups at Miami including Miami Students for Israel, the Association of Jewish Students, Greek-Jewish Council, and First Year Students of Hillel. Jewish High Holiday services are offered along with weekly Shabbat services, Shabbat dinner, and Passover Seders. The Beerman Jewish Student Center is celebrating 30 years in its current location, one block from Miami's campus.
