(Miami University, Oxford, OH) On Wednesday night, December 3, the Association of Jewish Students had their annual election for new Executive Board members for the 2004 year. The Board of the Association of Jewish Students are elected and appointed student officers representing Jewish students on Miami’s campus.

After recently revising the by-laws to model that of Miami’s Greek system, AJS’s Executive Board consisting of President, Vice President of Programming, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Religion and Culture, and Vice President of Finance appointed the representatives of the newly established Programming Board. The Programming Board’s chairpersons hope to more effectively plan and represent the Jewish student body and Greek system, with nominated representatives from Miami Students for Israel, AEPi fraternity and AEPhi sorority.

The motivation behind the change in the by-laws was to have a smaller executive board to communicate with programming members and develop stronger leaders within the Jewish community.

The result of the night’s elections is the following:
President—Ann Kravec, sophomore, Columbus, OH
Vice President of Programming—Heather Goldstein, junior, Silver Spring, MD
Vice President of Communication—Andrea Meier, junior, Baltimore, MD
Vice President of Religion and Culture—Matt Strauss, junior, Atlanta, GA
Vice President of Finance—Ilya Charnay, junior, Cincinnati, OH

The newly appointed program board members are:
First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH)—Lauren Levine, freshman, Alpharetta, GA
Greek-Jewish Co-chairs—Sam Pastor, senior, Cincinnati, OH
Andrea Kahn, junior, San Diego, CA
Social Action Chair—Sarah Landis, junior, Columbus, OH
Social Co-chairs—Kate Rosenblatt, freshman, Wethersfield, CT
Jon Sommers, sophomore, Woodbridge, CT
Sports Chair—Ira Barnett, senior, Maineville, OH
Women’s Group Representative—Monique Arar, sophomore, Columbus, OH

President elect, Ann Kravec has many goals and ideas she would like to contribute to Jewish life at Miami. She said, “I would love to see more attendance at events. There are a large number of Jewish students who have nothing to do with Hillel, so if we gear more programs towards their interests, we would be able to help raise our numbers and continue to improve our image campus-wide.”

Hillel at Miami University provides a wide variety of social, educational, community service, religious, and cultural experiences for students and the community of Oxford. There are many Jewish groups at Miami including Miami Students for Israel, the Association of Jewish Students, Greek-Jewish Council, and First Year Students of Hillel. Jewish High Holiday services are offered along with weekly Shabbat services, Shabbat dinner, and Passover seders. The Beerman Jewish Center is located one block from Miami’s campus.
