"Liberals into Anti-Semites: Mapping Rural anti-semetism in Northern Germany" One of the exciting new areas of research in Holocaust Studies is using Geographic Information Science technology (GIS) to link, display, and spirally analyze diverse forms of data (social, economic, temporal, etc) relating to disparate aspects of the genocide of the Jews. This talk will focus on the anti-semetic antecedents of the Shoah and suggest ways that historical GIS can broaden our understanding oh how liberal German peasants turned against their Jewish neighbors. A version of his talk was presented at Yad Vasehm with partial support of the Holocaust Fund.

About Henry Fenichel: Holocaust survivor and Professor Emeritus of physics at the University of Cincinnati, Henry Fenichel was born in Netherlands. Sensing the danger of the Nazis, Henry's mother was making every attempt to protect them from danger. At the age of six, Henry and his mother were discovered hiding in a convalescence home and were transported to the Westerbork Detention Camp. Shortly after arriving, they learned of a prisoner exchange that was going to allow a select number of Jews escape to Palestine. Through a miraculous series of events, Henry's mother was able to get them on the list. After waiting a period in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Henry and his mother arrived in Palestine before the end of the war.
