SAFETY TIPS FROM
THE CITY OF OXFORD The City of
Oxford and the Oxford Police Department would like
to wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday season.
Toward that end, we are providing some tips to make
your holidays safer and information to make your
time away from Oxford a little less stressful.
72 HOUR ORDINANCE: Vehicles parked on city
streets
for 72 consecutive hours are subject to citation and
impoundment. When leaving town, please make
arrangements to move your vehicle off city streets.
DESIGNATED SNOW ROUTES: Designated snow
routes are
marked with red, white & blue signs. Vehicles
parked on snow routes when there is 3 or more of
snow accumulation OR during a snow emergency will be
cited and towed at the owner's expense. To be
safe, remove your vehicle from a designated snow
route if you plan on being out of town for any
length of time.
VACANT HOUSE CHECK CARD: Fill out a vacant house
check card with OPD. This can be done on the City
of Oxford website at www.cityofoxford.org or at the
Oxford Police Department.
NEWSPAPERS AND MAIL SERVICE: Temporarily stop
your
newspaper and mail deliveries. A pile of newspapers
on your lawn and/or a full mailbox is a signal to
would-be burglars that no one is home.
LIGHTS: Leave outside lights on to help illuminate
your property while you are gone, leaving fewer
places for would-be burglars to hide. Lights on
timers inside help give the appearance someone's home.
DOUBLE CHECK LOCKS: Double-check the locks on
your
doors and windows. Make sure every potential access
is secure, especially basement/ground-level windows.
SECURE YOUR VALUABLES: Secure your valuables,
such
as jewelry, cash, cameras, computers, etc., before
you leave. If you are a student, take your items
home with you; if you are vacationing, consider
renting a safe deposit box at your local bank.
DON'T CHANGE YOUR MESSAGE: Don't announce your
travel plans on your answering machine. Leave your
message as it currently is; offering dates you are
leaving and returning is inviting someone to enter
your home while you are away.
DON'T TURN OFF HEAT: You must keep your residence
heated so that your pipes will not freeze. Keep
your thermostat set to a temperature no lower than
55-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Check with your landlord
to be sure.
FLAMMABLE OBJECTS: Make sure beds, couches, and
other flammable objects are at least two feet away
from heat sources.
PARTY CLEAN-UP: If you have a party before you
leave, make sure you clean up any areas outside your
home. If you leave party trash on the lawn, you may
have a citation upon your return.
For further information, please access the Police
link on the City of Oxford's website at
www.cityofoxford.org.
