A Survivor's Tale: Daniel Alon Speaks Out

Israeli Athlete on 1972 Munich Olympic Team Shares His Experiences

A Survivor's Tale: 1972 Munich Olympic Games Terror Survivor Speaks Out
Daniel Alon, an Israeli Olympic athlete who survived the Munich massacre in 1972, will speak at Miami on November 9th at 5:00 pm in Multipurpose Room C of the Shriver Center.

The talk is free and the public is welcome.

Daniel Alon was Israel's champion fencer for many years, representing Israel in international competitions before the fateful trip to Munich for the Summer Olympics, when most of the Israeli Olympic team and their coaches were taken hostage. 11 of the Israeli hostages were murdered by a Palestinian terrorist Group, Black September. For many years, Alon kept silent about the tragedy he witnessed, but since the release of the recent Steven Spielberg movie, “Munich,” he has begun to tell his story.

The Clothesline Project
The Clothesline Project honors survivors as well as victims of intimate violence. Anyone who has experienced such violence at any time in their life, is encouraged to come forward and design a shirt. Victim's families and friends are also invited to participate. It is the very process of designing a shirt that gives each person a new voice with which to expose an often horrific and unspeakable experience that has dramatically altered the course of their life. Participating in this project provides a powerful step towards helping a survivor break through the shroud of silence that has surrounded their experience.
The Clothesline Project will be displayed on Academic Quad from 10:00am to 5:00pm each day.

  • Sunday November 5, 3:00pm to 5:00pm, MacMillan 205
  • Monday November 6, 5:00pm to 7:00pm, MacMillan 205
  • Tuesday November 7, 5:00pm to 7:00pm, MacMillan 205
  • Wednesday November 8, 5:00pm to 7:00pm, MacMillan 205
  • If you are unable to make a shirt at those times, feel free to stop by the Center at any time this week, October 30-November 3, between 8:00am and 7:00pm Monday to Thursday, or between 8:00am and 5:00pm Friday.

Brazilian Lecture and Dinner
Our resident ethnomusicologist, Professor Tom Garcia, will be presenting a multimedia presentation on Carnaval in BRAZIL on November 28 at 5:30 p.m. in MMH 212. It is entitled, "Carnaval in Rio: Race, Class, and Nationality in Samba School Competition".

This will be FOLLOWED by a Brazilian meal (free) in Shriver. In order to attend the dinner, though, you MUST attend Dr. Garcia's lecture, and, since seating is limited, we need to know in advance how many people will be attending. We will be issuing tickets at the Carnaval lecture, which will entitle you to the dinner. (Dr. Garcia will also provide us with an explanation of the dinner menu, making this a fully sensory educational experience). Tickets will be issued first come, first serve at the event. RSVP to Dorothy Falke at 9-8309.
