Summer Programming, Conferences, Jobs, and Opportunities

Summer reading doesn’t have to be all about reading lists and next year’s classes. It is a great time to also explore some great Jewish literature. Next year, Hillel will be sponsoring a campus-wide Jewish Book Club Series in partnership with the Jewish Studies Program, King Library, and the Center for American and World Cultures.  Get a head start on the reading and check out other great Jewish literature at http://www.nextbook.org/ala/rl_between.html

Schusterman International Leaders Assembly is an intensive, exciting, six-day conference that enhances skills and energizes hundreds of Hillel campus activists from around the world.  Sessions focus on leadership skills, Jewish learning, program sharing, and networking to help develop Jewish leaders and aid in transforming campuses into vibrant Jewish communities.  This year the conference is being help at Camp Ramah Darom in Georgia, August 16-21.  Scholarship money is available for 3-5 Miami students.  Contact Amy at director@muhillel.org or register NOW online at www.hillel.org.

Archaeological Dig at Tel Dan, Israel:  The trip will include participation in an archaeological dig, lectures and workshops by leading archaeologists and biblical scholars, field trips to many archaeological sites and weekend trips (extra minimal cost) to Jerusalem, Sea of Galilee and Tel Aviv, where we will visit Jewish, Christian and Muslim holy and historical sites.  The dates are June 26 to July 22, 2005.  Cost is $350 per week for room and board (minimum of one week) and cost of airfare to Israel.  Students can earn up to 3 semester credits for an additional $400.  For information and to sign up online go to: http://www.yosh.co.il/milson/huc3/ngsba07.htm.   Local contact Julye Bidmead: bidmeaj@muohio.edu

Camp Young Judaea West Seeks Counselors
Young Judaea, the Zionist youth movement of Hadassah, is seeking counselors for Camp Young Judaea West,a resident camp in Salem, Ore. This Jewish/Zionist camping program is operated on the grounds of the 4H campsite facility. The camp is relatively small with about 70 campers, ranging in age from third to eighth grade. Staff training will start June 26, and camp begins July 5. Campers leave July 24, and staff will be leaving on July 25. The positions available are primarily for counselors, but the camp is also looking for unit heads. The unit head position requires someone with experience in supervising staff and running day-to-day activities. Salaries are based on experience. Work at Camp Yofi: Family Camp for Jewish Families with Children with Autism
Camp Ramah Darom in Clayton, Ga., is looking for college and graduate students with interests in social service, special education, general education or autism to serve as family chaverim (pals) for Camp Yofi: Family Camp for Jewish Families with Children with Autism on Aug. 23-28 (right after Hillel's 2005 Charles Schusterman International Student Leaders Assembly). Chaverim spend mornings and evenings with one child throughout the week, providing consistent and comforting support for the child and the family. Ramah Darom is also looking for people with special talents in art, music, dance, sports, nature and camping to provide additional programming support for Camp Yofi. The camp provides housing, food, airfare, an incredible and moving learning experience, as well as a small stipend. Rabbi Shawn Fields-Meyer, founder of Ozreinu, a Torah-oriented, non-denominational, spiritual support group for Jewish parents of special-needs children, will serve as the scholar-in-residence. Jewish Impact Films Offers Fellowships for Aspiring Jewish Filmmakers
Jewish Impact Films is proud to announce the Second Annual Jewish Impact Films Summer Fellowship. Last year's program was a great success, where talented students from all over the country expanded their filmmaking skills under the guidance of leading Hollywood producers while simultaneously strengthening their Jewish identity. The program runs in Los Angeles from July 31 through Aug. 21. Participants will take classes, engage in Israel advocacy, function as a think tank and explore their Judaism in a supportive, creatively charged environment. Only 15 fellowships will be awarded. The deadline for applications has been extended to May 31. Applications are available at www.jewishimpactfilms.com.
 
JESNA Offers Summer and Academic Year Internships
JESNA is looking for a qualified individual to fill a full-time, paid summer internship (June-August) in its New York office. Responsibilities include assisting with daily departmental activity, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, vendor correspondence and file maintenance, collecting and entering data from a variety of sources, and preparing financial reports for presentation to staff, board members and others.To find out more about what JESNA does, go to www.jesna.org. JCRC of Boston Seeks Synagogue Social-Justice Coordinator
The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston is seeking a full-time synagogue social-justice coordinator to consult with synagogues on making social justice more central to congregational identity and engaging in more effective social-justice work. S/he will primarily 1) oversee the One Family initiative to end family homelessness, 2) provide leadership and organizational training and consultation and 3) facilitate networking and training opportunities across congregations. Qualifications include experience in leadership development, excellent interpersonal/communication skills, strong Judaic background and a passion for social justice. KOACH Seeks Field Worker for Chicago-Area Office
KOACH, the Center for Conservative Judaism on Campus, is looking for a field worker to be based at its Midwest office in Northbrook, Ill. Field workers work with students, Hillel professionals and synagogues in program planning, intern supervision, recruitment activities, writing articles for KOACH's webzine and more. Responsibilities may include Web site maintenance and birthright israel administration. Field workers serve as strong advocates for KOACH and the Conservative movement in campus communities. Apply for JDC's Ralph I. Goldman Fellowship
The American Joint Jewish Distribution Committee (JDC) is looking for applicants for its Ralph I. Goldman Fellowship in Interational Jewish Communal Service. This prestigious fellowship offers future leaders of the Jewish community, whether lay or professional, a significant experience in international Jewish communal service. The year of work-study is comprised of a range of unique assignments that respond to the changing needs of the Jewish communities around the world. The first few months are spent in an orientation period in New York, followed by two overseas assignments lasting four to five months each. Candidates must have a graduate degree or equivalent, leadership capabilities, community service experience and an interest in Jewish communal affairs. Applications are due Dec. 15 for the 12-month fellowship experience beginning Sept. 2006. Apply for New Fellowship in Jewish Social-Justice Teaching
The Jewish Council on Urban Affairs is proud to announce Nadiv: The Jewish Social Justice Teaching Fellowship. Nadiv offers six to eight 20-somethings the opportunity to learn more about Judaism and social justice while teaching middle school students. Fellows earn a $2,000 stipend for participating in the 10-month program, which includes monthly study sessions, two weekend retreats and approximately 30 hours of teaching over the course of the year.
