Thursday, April 8, 2004: Ms. Stevens' presentation, "An Evening with Madame F," which takes place at 7:00 p.m. in Hall Auditorium, is co-sponsored with the Jewish Studies Program. The performance will be an hour in length followed by an hour-long question and answer period. Adopting the persona of Fania Fenelon, a French cabaret singer who became a member of the all-female orchestra at Auschwitz, Ms. Stevens uses music and personal accounts to depict the struggle and moral dilemma of camp inmates who survived by prostituting their art. The horror and guilt experienced by Fenelon and other Jewish musicians confined to concentration camps during World War II is palpable in this riveting performance. Ms. Stevens' narrative, with music composed and arranged by Fred Cohen, is interspersed with segments of songs and numbers that were actually played in the concentration camps. The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Claudia Stevens also meditates on the issue of treating the Holocaust as the subject for artistic expression. For more information contact Dorothy at 9-8309.

American Jewish Committee Essay Competition: A 650 word essay to be published in a new book dealing with Jewish identity/ies among Jews in their twenties. Essays should answer the question: "What does being Jewish mean to you as a 20-something living in your society?" Some things you might want to consider are Israel, spirituality, community, Jewish rituals and practice, tradition, family, food, culture, history, etc. We encourage you to submit essays, poetry, stories&Mac247;fiction based on fact&Mac247;as well as other forms of written representation. Ultimately, the essays will be compiled into a book that will serve as a guide to Jews in their twenties by Jews in their twenties. The book will be a compendium of voices that will, at once, serve as a window to the Judaism of people in their twenties to older generations and as a guide to younger Jews looking for ways to create and, in due course, celebrate their identities as Jews and as younger adults. The competition is an attempt to recognize and grapple with the fact that Judaism is increasingly a choice for young people rather than an obligation. Jews choose the ways in which they observe, believe, practice, and, ultimately, understand what being Jewish in a secular society is about. All essays should be sent via email only to fellowship@ajc.org. In the subject line, please write "AJC Essay Competition," with the essay as a Microsoft Word® attachment. Essays should be no longer than 650 words. THE FINAL DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS MAY 3, 2004. As the essays will be for publication, we ask that each respondent include the following: Full Name, Mailing address, Phone number, Email address, Place of Birth, Profession/Field of Study, a biographical sentence conveying something of interest about the author.
"Citizens of the World, 2004-2005": Preparations for next year's theme year, "Citizens of the World" are underway, according to Mary Woodworth, Associate Provost and Chair of the all-university theme steering committee. The theme year, which was announced by Provost Crutcher last April, will focus on topics related to what it means to be members of a world community. A number of programs that incorporate the theme are already being planned. These include the selection of the freshman reading, next fall's Center for American and World Cultures lecture series entitled, "Homeless in the World", the Strippel Forum on Social Justice and Human Rights to be held on November 12, a conference on "Freedom Summer" to be held on September 18, and the Faber Lecture by Professor Sut Jhally of Simon Frasier University, which will take place on September 23. The theme year logo will be created by students in the Art Department. The all-university theme committee seeks proposals for curricular and co-curricular events that will foster year-long examination of the topic. Proposals should be one to two pages in length and describe ways to incorporate the theme into existing activities, such as, courses, lecture series, exhibits, student activities, etc. The Office of the Provost will consider requests for up to $1000 in matching funds from departments, programs, or individuals, including student groups that propose events consistent with the theme. Projects must engage students, faculty, and staff beyond one's own department or program. Applicants may apply as individuals or as a group. Proposals should be sent by April 15, 2004 for fall 2004 events and by October 15, 2004 for spring 2005 events. Proposals should be addressed to Dr. Mary E. National Conference for College Women Student Leaders : The conference will be held June 3-5 at American University in Washington, DC under the theme Purpose, POWER, and Progress. Early registration fee for this 2-day leadership and networking experience, INCLUDING CONFERENCE FEES AND MEALS is $270 (add $90 additional if housing is needed.) Attendance scholarships are available; and applications for scholarship are due April 16. The program is rich with informative workshops (covering everything from life balance to politics to career planning), inspirational plenary speakers, and the exceptional Women of Distinction Awards. SPEND A YEAR IN ISRAEL BUILDING DEMOCRACY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE: The New Israel Fund and Shatil announce the Nomi Fein Social Justice Fellowship and the Richard J. Israel Memorial Fellowship. Israel z"l, each fellowship allows an individual to experience Israel first-hand by working with an Israeli grassroots organization. Strong conversational Hebrew is recommended. COLLEGE SENIORS APPLY FOR RAC's LEGISLATIVE ASSISTANT PROGRAM 2004-2005 The Eisendrath Legislative Assistant Fellowship Program is a fellowship program for recent college graduates at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Eisendrath Legislative Assistants (LAs) advocate in Washington, DC, for Jewish values and social justice on behalf of the Reform Jewish movement. LAs take part in a wide range of social action activities. This year, one of the LAs will work with the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism in the New York office of the Union for Reform Judaism. The LA will participate in NY-based coalitions and work with the Commission staff and the various departments of the Union for Reform Judaism to develop programmatic and educational materials for congregations. Applebaum Fellowship - Applications Now Being Accepted: The Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Fellowship is a one-year, full-time position, beginning July 2004 and ending June 2005. ASSESSMENT OF MIAMI STUDENTS' SPIRITUALITY: My name is Jonathan (Jon) Kroll and I am graduate student here at Miami University. One project that I am currently working on is an assessment of students' spirituality. The overarching goal of this endeavor is to evaluate the need to implement more or reduce the amount of Inter-Faith dialogue and programming. To do this, I will be conducting small group interview/discussions throughout the next two months. To provide an accurate and valid assessment to the University, I will need a wide array of participants. These include students involved in religious student organizations, those who attend religious services on a consistent basis, those who find their faith in more of a social/cultural context, as well as those who are not involved (religiously) at all. REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE ON DISSERTATION:
My name is Sandra Kirchner and I am a doctoral student in the psychology department at Miami. I am currently working on my dissertation research. I am interested in exploring the relationship between identity and spirituality in the lives of young women. I am contacting you because you are listed as the president of one of the several religious/spiritual organizations on campus. I am trying to include women from a variety of spiritual/religious (and even non-religious) background. Therefore, I was hoping that some of the women in your organization might be interested in participating in my project. I am looking for women between the ages of 13 and 22. Participation is in the form of two 1 1/2 to 2 hour long interviews. There are openings for the interviews most weeknights and weekends and they are held in Benton Hall. The first interviews will be in January and the second in February. There will also be a group discussion held in late January/early February, but participation in it is not required to participate in the interview segment.
