JEWISH LIFE ON CAMPUS THIS WEEK
Pledge a Meal for Charity all week: Volunteers are needed to help sign-up students to take part in a campus-wide Pledge a Meal Program for charity. Through the Pledge a Meal program, students are asked to voluntarily give up dinner or the value of dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 16. Funds raised are donated to local charities that address issues of hunger and homelessness. Last year the program raised $2000. Volunteers are needed for two hour shifts during lunch and dinner from Sunday, Oct 31- Friday, Nov. 5. Also, the night of November 16th, there is a Writers Harvest reading (creative writing professors) to raise money to fight hunger. Half the funds raised will go to the FreeStore FoodBank in Cincinnati. The rest of the money will be donated based on student volunteer interest. Contact fellow@muhillel.org to volunteer your time to this important project.

Association of Jewish Students Executive Board Elections are on Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at 8:00 pm. The Executive and Program Boards of the Association of Jewish Students (AJS) consist of the outstanding student leaders of the Jewish community at Miami University. The positions of President, Vice President of Programming, Vice President of Communications, Vice President of Religion and Culture, and Vice President of Finance will be elected on Tuesday, November 30 at 8:00 pm at Hillel. Program Board positions of First Year Students of Hillel Chair, Greek-Jewish Chair, Social Action Chair, Social Chair, Sports Chair, United Jewish Communities Chair, Women's Group Chair, and Shabbat Dinner Coordinator will be appointed by December 7. Now accepting applications for Jewish Business Mentoring Program: Do you want a mentor in the business world? Someone who is a Miami grad? Who is Jewish? If you are a Jewish undergraduate student in a business related major, we have your connection. Do you need a mentor, a connection, someone to guide you, help you along into the working world? The Jewish Business Mentoring Program, A Family Affair will pair 20 qualified Miami students with mentors according to their fields, goals, and locations. birthright israel: Hillel at Miami University is organizing a campus-based birthright israel trip in May/June. Register for Hillel's Winter Israel Missions: Hillel is once again offering its premier Winter Israel Mission this December! Get ready for one week of packed activity, learning and fun; the chance to meet Hillel leaders from around the country; the Steinhardt Shabbaton; a new Global Israel Showcase and more. This year's Israel Mission will offer three tracks: Advanced Advocacy, Pluralism, and Tzedek. Miami University Interfaith Israel Trip during Winter Break: My name is Jon Kroll and as part of my graduate studies program (College Student Personnel), I am coordinating a MultiFaith (InterFaith) Experience to Israel from December 26 to January 5. The overarching goal of this Experience is to unite students, staff, and faculty in an experiential activity that will allow for a better understanding of various faith perspectives. It is a hope that this Experience will encourage the participants to return to Miami and work towards creating a more welcoming environment for members of our University Community from all faith perspectives. I am currently working on garnering funding support to curb expenses for participants on this experience. If you are interested in participating, please do hot hesitate to call me at 9-6759.

The Ohio Voter Protection Program is a non-partisan coalition of organizations (including the Ohio NAACP, Ohio League of Women Voters, Ohio Urban League, People for the American Way) formed to ensure that, unlike in Florida last election, every vote cast in Ohio this year counts. We are looking for volunteer voter advocates to be stationed at the polling places for the Cincinnati precincts that have historically had the most disqualified votes. The advocates will monitor the process and assist any voters who encounter difficulties in voting. We will provide training for all volunteers and all volunteers will be connected to a team of lawyers that will be ready to take immediate action in the event any irregularities occur. CONFERENCES
Rabbi David Saperstein, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism in Washington, DC to speak during Shabbat services at Temple Israel in Dayton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 12. Rabbi Saperstein will discuss "Religious Tolerance vs. Religious Extremism at Home and Abroad." Following services, students are invited to stay for an Oneg Shabbat Reception and Songfest. The services and songfest are part of the Union for Reform Judaism's Northeast Lakes Council Regional Biennial, which will bring more than 250 delegates from Reform congregations in fives states to Dayton for a weekend of study, worship, entertainment and workshops. The United Jewish Communities General Assembly(GA), November 12-16, 2004 Cleveland. The United Jewish Communities General Assembly is the annual gathering of the organized Jewish community. This conference typically attracts 5,000 participants including Jewish lay leaders, professionals, undergraduate and graduate students. Special student programs are held which provide opportunities to network with other students from around the world as well as Jewish community leaders from a variety of Jewish and secular professions. The GA is also an opportunity for people to gather and discuss issues in their communities relating to Jewish identity, community relations, policy and current trends in the Jewish community. National Foundation for Jewish Culture Invites Entries for Emerging Visual Artist Prize. The Ronnie Heyman Prize for an Emerging Jewish Visual Artist has been established by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture (http://jewishculture.org) to recognize and support an emerging visual artist who is creating a body of work that reflects the Jewish experience. Proposals will be accepted from an artist who has a body of work that has been publicly exhibited and reflects the Jewish experience or addresses issues in the Jewish community. Work will be accepted in the disciplines of painting, printmaking, illustration, sculpture, photography and multimedia, and is restricted to artists who have been working no more than 10 years in the field. The artist must be a U.S. citizen, and the deadline is Nov. 4. The prize includes a grant of $2,500. Apply for Koret Young Writer of Jewish Themes Award. The Koret Foundation invites applications for the third annual Koret Young Writer on Jewish Themes Award. One writer whose work contains Jewish themes will be awarded $25,000 and will spend three months in residence at Stanford University. Applicants must be 40 years or younger and have published no more than one book at the time of application. This award is for fiction, non-fiction, or poetry. Scholarly work will not be considered. Non-U.S. residents are invited to apply, provided they meet the eligibility requirements. The deadline is Nov. 15, 2004. 15th Guild of Temple Musicians Young Composers Award: In its continuing effort to provide opportunities for young composers to create compositions which will enhance Sabbath liturgy and inspire the religious experiences of congregations, the Guild of Temple Musicians (an affiliate of the American Conference of Cantors) announces the fifteenth Young Composers Award. The competition is open to any Jewish musician born on or after January 1, 1970, and submissions are sought for a suite (a group of two or three movements) for solo instrument and piano. the submitted composition should have a duration of 10-12 minutes in length, and should be based on Jewish materials. Suggested ideas will be included in the information which applicants may obtain by contacting the competition chairman, composer Ben Steinberg.The competition is unique in that it is the only competition of its kind to include for the winner a cash award ($1800), a travel subsidy which will enable the composer to attend the premiere performance, and the submission of the composition for possible publication. Deadline for submission of entries, either received or postmarked, is January 7, 2005. Our beautiful furnished apartment is located in an ideal uptown location just a block from the uptown shops and restaurants! I have a new queen bed in a giant oversized room with one friendly roommate. We have a livingroom area, kitchen and great group of girls. You would need to interview with her to see if it would work out for the semester. I will be returning for my final semester. Our two story building housing a tv lounge and game room, computer lab, and library is open Monday-Friday from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm and during program hours.
