THE GUILD OF TEMPLE MUSICIANS ANNOUNCES ITS 15TH YOUNG COMPOSERS AWARD: The YCA competition is the only competition offering an opportunity for Jewish musicians to create new music for Jewish religious services. Eligibility is not confined to a single interpretation of Jewish musical expression. The Young Composers Award is one of the few competitions which includes a cash prize ($1800) for the winning work, a live performance of that composition, transportation and housing for the winning composer to attend the premiere performance, and the possibility of publication of the composition. The purpose of the YCA is to encourage the work of young Jewish composers, to add to the repertoire of good synagogue music for worship and concert, and to inspire the religious experiences of congregations and communities. Jewish musicians are eligible to enter if they were born on or after January 1, 1969, and who will be at least 18 years of age by the deadline for submitting an entry. For 2004 the YCA criteria (which focus on a different type of composition each year) request a set of three pieces with a total duration time of ten to twelve minutes. The music should be written for a cantor with a medium or high voice, accompanied by piano and one other instrument. The texts should be related by source or topic, should be in Hebrew, and should be drawn from Jewish liturgy, biblical sources, or Jewish commentary. The pieces should be postmarked for submission no later than January 9, 2004. There is no required entry fee. Inquiries and a complete description of the 2004 assignment should be requested from Ben Steinberg, YCA Competition Chairman, via e-mail at ben@templesinai.net, by phone at (416) 487-4161, by fax at (416) 487-5499, or by writing to: Ben Steinberg, Composer-in-Residence, Temple Sinai Congregation, 210 Wilson Ave., Toronto, ON M5M 3B1, Canada.
ESSAY CONTEST and WRITING CONTEST: "The Jerusalem Report" and Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life are accepting submissions for the Jerusalem Report-Hillel Essay Contest. Essays may be 650-850 words in length describing one's Jewish experience on campus. This can relate to Israel, religion, Tzedek (social justice) work, or any other way one connects to Judaism on campus. Essays must be submitted by February 29, 2004 and first place includes a free trip to Israel and publication in "The Jerusalem Report." For more information about the contest, visit http://www.hillel.org/Hillel/NewHille.nsf/studentlife/essay. Students may e-mail submissions to jreportessay@hillel.org.
